Hydrophobic Wood

Wood of different species treated with commercial enzymes (specifically laccases) and a phenolic compound that includes a hydrophobic part.

Wood of different species treated with commercial enzymes (specifically laccases) and a phenolic compound that includes a hydrophobic part. The selected hydrophobic compound is lauryl gallate, usually used in the food industry as an antioxidant. The wood treated with this process maintains its natural appearance, but acquires the hydrophobic property in a stable form that is resistant to washing with water or organic solvents. These new properties are permanent and do not modify the mechanical properties of the original material. This wood is mainly used for exterior applications.
